About Me
Art has always held a special place in my life, yet I never considered making art myself and chose to be a writer instead. That led to a career in advertising and communications, which included some tangential work in graphic design. First in New York, later in Florida, then in DC. It was only years later that I felt the urge to pick up a paint brush—and it has been the most gratifying decision I’ve made.
Organic shapes and lines as well as my personal lexicon of marks and symbols are my primary inspiration. I love exploring the unique nature of different shapes and their relationship to one another—and what that connotes. And I am fascinated by all kinds of lines and where they lead me in a composition.
Like many who make abstract art, I never have a clear plan when I begin. I go by feel and, at some point in the process, I see a structure that grabs my attention and moves me into the thinking phase, where I try to strike the right balance between developing and refining the composition and not losing its authenticity.
I favor working on paper, in a range of mixed media (acrylics, inks, collage, markers and oil pastels). I also use a variety of brushes, including some handmade ones.
Currently I work from my home studio in Alexandria, VA.
